Lewis Central Middle School - Academic Rigor

Challenging all students to learn at a level that requires struggle and perseverance, thinking and questioning, as well as continued connection to the real world will be the ultimate goal for Lewis Central Middle School staff in 2016-17.  That appropriate challenge is referred to as Academic Rigor.  Academic rigor at LCMS is empowering and cultivating in all students the capacity to:

  • Embrace challenges; set goals, learn how to struggle effectively

  • Question; investigate and research, explore options, think critically

  • Formulate Arguments; seek and evaluate evidence, effect change

  • Employ Flexibility; try new ideas and approaches or accept current practices

  • Collaborate; use the expertise and guidance of peers and adults to achieve goals

  • Apply learning (from all areas); to messy, real-world situations, demonstrate level of understanding and ability to perform or create things

  • Reflect; evaluate thinking and performance as they evolve and at the end of a process

in an environment that includes interaction with crucial issues, complex texts, and provocative discussions to prepare students for life.

To truly reach the appropriate level of Academic Rigor, it is important that all stakeholders (teachers, students and parents) understand and accept that struggle is essential for middle school students to learn at the highest levels.  We strive for students/teachers/parents to accept struggle as a sign of learning, and for students to struggle effectively and productively as teachers and parents support students appropriately through struggle.
