LCMS Honor Choir Students

The middle school Vocal Music Department took a total of 17 students to Underwood High School on March 6, 2019 to participate in the Southwest Iowa Choral Directors Association (SWICDA) Elementary and Middle School Honor Choir festival.  Over 200 selected students spent the afternoon rehearsing music for a performance for friends and family members that evening. All interested LCMS vocal students completed an audition before their director, Ms. Natalie Hearn. Participants were given an opportunity to utilize skills learned in choir class to  independently prepare challenging music for an elite group.

The Elementary Choir consisted of 5th and 6th grade students and was directed by Michelle Swanson, a professor from the University of Northern Iowa.  The choir performed 6 pieces, one of which was entitled Three Quotes By Mark Twain by Andrea Ramsey.  It featured 3 movements, each consisting of a short and pragmatic quote by Twain himself.  The performers enjoyed doing a bit of acting to enhance the overall effect of each quote. The following 6th grade students represented LCMS: Addison Bortmess, Ethan Bortmess, Dylan Dostal, Natalia Gomez, Maya Humlicek, Aeva Moore, Elise Mullenix, and Layne Smith.

The Middle School Choir was made up of 7th and 8th grade students and was under the direction of former Treynor High School choir director, Roger Jensen.  These students performed 5 pieces, including Climbin’ Up The Mountain  by Rollo Dillworth.  The students enjoyed the gospel-style spiritual and its 3 layered independent parts.  The following 7th and 8th grade students represented LCMS this year: Eleanor Cooper-Ohm, Carolynne Fell, Bryson Jensen, Kody Kimrey, Charlotte Moore, Karyssa O’Doniel, Aleesha Oden, Alexis Ruff, and Levisit Scott. Of the 9 students selected, Eleanor, Carolynne, and Levisit are all second-year participants.

This is the second consecutive year that LCMS has participated in the SWICDA Honor Choir festival.  The students and their director are excited to return again in the 2019-2020 school year.
